Overcoming Your Fear of Changing Career
Overcoming Your Fear of Changing Career
Written by Ros Bott
The reason so many people get stuck in a career they dislike is often because of fear. If you feel held back and stuck in your job because of fear of changing career, you are not alone.
Fear is something most of us feel at some time, but it can have a very negative impact on your life. Once you allow it to rule you, it will prevent you from following your dreams, taking risks, or achieving success.

Fear can paralyze you. It can take away your quality of life and keep you inactive and stuck in a situation you do not like.

Fear is a natural reaction to a potential threat. However, when your fear is stopping you from moving forward in your life and career, it has become your master. There are steps you can take to reclaim control and move forward into a more fulfilling way of life.

1. Change Your Focus

The reason we often get stuck is because we fear the worse. The perceived threat causes us to hold back and cling to the familiar, even if that familiar thing is unpleasant.
When people think of changing to a different career, they often expect the worse to happen: they think they will fail, they think they won't be able to do it or that they will lose money and get into debt. If these are the kinds of things that are holding you back, then you are focusing on the negative.

Instead, make a choice to expect good things and to see the positive in every situation. Start telling yourself that you are strong and capable and that you can handle any situation. Focus on finding solutions instead of seeing only the problems. Visualise success and believe that you can get there.
This does not mean that you blind yourself to potential problems. Instead, you are focused on finding solutions to those problems instead of fearing them, and you will be able to plan your way ahead more realistically.

2. Examine Your Fears

What exactly are you afraid of? Have a good look at what they are, and then decide which are realistic and which are irrational.

Remember that most of the things that we fear don't actually happen. Are you going to give up on a fulfilling career because you were scared of something that had a low chance of happening anyway?
Which of your fears come through conditioned thinking? Do they come from values you truly believe in, or from outmoded social viewpoints that no longer have any relevance in your life? Are they someone else's fears, rather than your own?

What is the worse that could happen? If your fears really came to pass, what would you do? Would you survive? You might find that your worst fears are not really as bad as you thought. Most of us get through the worst case scenarios and learn from them, so is your fear really the end of the world?
Once you have done this, you may find that you can dismiss a few of your fears.

3. Do The Thing You Fear

Recognise, first of all, that fear is no more than a feeling. It is not a reason for not doing something.
Many people believe that if they fear something, then they should not do it. This is a myth. Fear is very often just the other side of the coin from excitement.

Going ahead and doing the very thing that you fear is often the best way of dispelling your fear. Once you have worked your way through it (as Susan Jeffer's says: Feel the Fear and do It Anyway), you may find that there really was nothing to fear in the first place.

Working through fear and doing what you fear does not mean that you do something reckless or stupid. But it does mean that you do not allow fear to stop you from achieving the career and life of your dreams.

For more information I strongly recommend Susan Jeffer's book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. You can buy this book from Amazon using the link below.

Great looking blog and a great article.
I am nearing 60 and in a job I hate
(strong emotion there) I am an engineer working for a national Company. The
only reason I stay is because of my pension. To overcome this I have started my
own home business to secure an income during my retirement.

Hi,

I enjoyed your article very much. I was a correctional officer for 16
years and decided for stress reasons to take a paycut.

Very hard decision but
I am glad that i made the choice.

I could not have done it without the extra
money from my websites though.

Keep up the articles

Hi Ros...

Nice article. My wife and I have confronted our fears about me not
going back to truck driving (which I hated) and how it may affect our finances.
In the time off, we have come up with a 1 year written plan on survival as I
pursue the Internet niche. At least we have a plan B just in case I haven't
reached the IM goal when I need to.
