How Professional Business Coaching Can Help Your Home Business
How Professional Business Coaching Can Help Your Home Business
Written by Ros Bott
It's very exciting. You've decided to start a home based business and you are now an entrepreneur. There's a lot to learn and much to do, but the thrill of building your business, the freedom of being your own boss and the possibilities of great financial rewards are worth it. You're feeling really positive, so why would you need professional business coaching at this stage of the game?

The truth is, many people start off a home business without being aware of some of the realities of working at home, and after a few weeks or months can suddenly find themselves getting disillusioned, overwhelmed, unfocussed or simply exhausted. At this point it is too easy to consider giving up, but with a little forward planning there is no need to feel like this.

Here are a few tips that you might need to consider when you start a home based business:

1) Make sure you have a designated working space in your home. If at all possible, make it somewhere where you can shut the door and not be interrupted by others, but if it has to be a corner of the living room or bedroom, it's important that other members of the household understand that you need peace and quiet while you are working.

2) Organize your working space. Stock up on any stationary and other resources you need to run your business, and keep them in order near by you so you do not waste time looking for stuff. Keep the area clear of clutter, as this will affect your ability to think clearly.

3) Organize your time. Time management is one of the biggest challenges of working at home, yet it is often one that is not considered at the beginning. You need to be very clear about the days and hours you will work, what you will do when and how you will keep your time organized. Setting yourself a timetable and a system of to-do lists will ensure that you keep on track and do not fall behind with important tasks.

4) Have a plan. Another pitfall that many new entrepreneurs fall into is to get caught up in action, without having a coherent plan. It is understandable that you want to get on with important projects and get "busy", but without planning goals and action plans you can end up getting unfocussed, distracted and eventually demotivated. When you plan what you want to achieve, and then work backwards to develop a step-by-step plan before taking action, you will then stay on track and actually waste less time than if you just plunge in.

5) Build a Support Network. Some people find working at home too lonely, but you do not have to feel like this. If your work is offline, then find some local networking events where you can grow your business by making connections with other people, as well as finding friends and people you can call on for advice. If your work is mainly online, then forums within your line of business work in exactly the same way.

6) Be a professional. You may work at home, but unless you present yourself and your business as professional, people will not be interested. Set up a separate bank account for your business, create professional looking marketing materials and be courteous and polite when dealing with your potential or existing customers. Ask yourself what kind of person you would prefer to do business with, and then be that person.

7) Have a positive mental attitude. This may be the last item on this list, but it is by no means the least important! Self belief, confidence, determination, patience and perseverence are all qualities that any entrepreneur needs in business. If you are lacking in any of these, they can be learned and developed. However, if you are not prepared to develop yourself in these areas, you will be severely handicapped in the business world.

All of the above are extremely important for the person who works at home and need to be taken into consideration from the very beginning.

Professional business coaching is a service that will help you to develop any of the above, particularly Item 7.
